The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has announced its annual Brake Safety Week, set to take place August 24–30, 2025, across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
This high-visibility enforcement initiative focuses on one of the most critical components of any commercial vehicle: the brake system. And this year, inspectors will be paying even closer attention to one area in particular—brake drums and rotors.
Why This Matters
During Brake Safety Week, CVSA-certified officers will conduct thorough inspections of commercial vehicles. Those found with brake-related out-of-service (OOS) violations—or any other OOS issues—will be immediately removed from service until the issues are corrected.
This year’s campaign puts drums and rotors in the spotlight. According to the CVSA:
“Brake drum and rotor issues may affect a vehicle’s brake efficiency. Broken pieces may become dislodged en route, causing damage to other vehicles or leading to serious injuries or fatalities.”
Inspectors may also utilize performance-based brake testers (PBBT) to assess braking force and identify underperforming systems.
What’s At Risk?
For carriers, a failed inspection can lead to:
🚫 Unexpected vehicle downtime
💸 Costly repairs and towing
📉 CSA score impacts
⚠️ Potential damage to your company’s reputation and contracts
