Every year, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) dedicates a full week to an often-overlooked but absolutely critical part of commercial vehicle safety: brakes.

From August 24–30, certified inspectors across Canada, the U.S., and Mexico will conduct inspections, educate drivers, and collect vital data — all part of Brake Safety Week 2025.

🔧 Why It Matters

Your braking system is arguably the most important safety feature on your truck or fleet vehicle. Worn-out brake drums, cracked rotors, air leaks, or misadjusted components can seriously affect a vehicle’s stopping power — and put lives at risk.

This year, CVSA inspectors will specifically focus on brake drums and rotors, looking for cracks, damage, or wear that could compromise brake efficiency or lead to debris becoming dislodged in transit.

Any vehicle found with brake-related out-of-service violations will be pulled from the road until the issues are resolved — no exceptions.

🛑 What to Expect During Brake Safety Week

  • Routine inspections of commercial vehicles, with a sharp eye on the brake systems and components.

  • Drum and rotor inspections as a special focus in 2025.

  • Performance-Based Brake Testers (PBBT) used in some jurisdictions to assess braking force and stopping capabilities.

  • Brake violation data will be collected and analyzed by CVSA, with results shared publicly later this year.

This initiative isn't just about enforcement — it's about education. Inspectors and carriers will take the opportunity to speak with drivers, technicians, and fleet managers about how to better maintain, inspect, and optimize brake systems year-round.

🧰 How to Prepare

Preparation doesn’t start in August — it starts now. Whether you operate a fleet or manage safety and compliance, now’s the time to:

  • Review brake maintenance records.

  • Perform pre-inspection checks on drums, rotors, air lines, and warning systems.

  • Remind drivers to flag unusual braking behavior or dashboard alerts.

  • Ensure all documentation is organized and accessible in case of an audit.
